As a product manager, there are many things we can do each day to improve and implement our product development plan. But, what are the best things to do if you want to achieve great results for your product?
It’s all about the Big Picture
Product managers are able to see the future and be successful. It is essential to know the lot and be able to envision what your product will look like in three, four, or five years. This means you will need to be able to see the “big picture”. This is the basic product manager resume stuff.
Yes, I am fully aware that product managers are responsible for 1,000 little details that take up our entire day. You can’t let yourself get caught up in the small details. You must be able to see beyond the daily grind and where your product should go.
When you have a clear vision of the product you want, you can share it with your team. Your team will be able to see the potential success of your product in clear terms if you can communicate that vision clearly. This will give your team a clear goal that everyone can work towards.
A Journey Of A 1,000 Miles Begins…
It is great to be able to see the big picture. But what then? Sometimes, the distance between where you are now and where you want it to be can seem too far for product managers to travel. You need to find a way forward.
This is the best way to ensure your product gets to the destination you desire. The next step is to identify the path. Find the course and start making it happen.
You can have a quick win by picking a small task that is easy to complete as your first task. It will feel like you are making progress toward your product goal when you can achieve it. This is the first step to making everything more accessible.
Get started now!
Every product manager on the planet doesn’t want to make a mistake. Every product manager fears that making a wrong product decision will lead to a product that is not working out and leave us in the weeds. This fear must be overcome. Make a decision and then move on.
Not every decision we make will be correct. What’s worse, we may not be able to make the right decision. It is easy to get lost in the process of evaluating and reevaluating the situation and then end up spinning our wheels, leading us nowhere. The shoe company said, “Just Do It.”
You will find things you cannot do once you get started. Prioritizing your time is critical. You will have to decide whether to stop doing certain things or put off doing other things in order to make the decision to start doing something that will move your product forward. It’s okay. Getting your product closer to success is an essential thing a product manager can accomplish. Do what is necessary now, and get it done!
What Does All This Mean for You?
Every day brings more tasks to our desks. Product managers who want to make excellent product management decisions need to know how to prioritize the work they are doing.
This is the best way to approach it. Start with the big picture. What would be the impact of our product if we were to run the world? After we have this information, we can start to identify the things we must do to realize our future vision. We won’t be able to get to the place we want to go to if we don’t move now.
Talking to other product managers often makes me feel overwhelmed – there is so much to do and so little time. I can understand their feelings. You can start today to achieve the fantastic things you desire with your product by taking the time and visualizing what you want.
