The results from the first-ever Accidental Product Manager “where do you need the most help with product management” survey are out! Let me take a moment to acknowledge everyone who took your time and (1) go through my long email, then (2) click”the “reply” button and send me the information for the areas of product management you would like assistance in. The responses were exactly what I had hoped for and also a little bit of a surprise. Let me tell you why.
The Vote
Before spending any time looking over these results from the poll, we ought to look back and ensure that we recall precisely what everyone decided to vote on. I came up with seven (very high-level) phases of the process of managing a product. The question I asked the participants was which was the one they wanted to learn more about?
Be aware of everything you must do prior to deciding to develop an item. ID customers, segments, needs, etc.
Plan – when you’ve decided to build an item (or the next version), this is the end of the planning for sales, business planning, roadmap development, and so on. the next step.
Execute – You know the look of your product. It’s here that you decide who you’ll sell it to, how to attract their attention, how much it’ll cost, and so on.
Create This is the hard work of understanding the needs of your customer in creating your marketing strategy as well as determining specifications for your products, creating different kinds of content, and so on.
Refine – we don’t get it ideally the first time. It is because we take what we’ve done to improve.
Success – How can you assist your company in selling its product? What tools and courses are you in charge of?
The next step – often referred to as support, really is all about how you interact with your current customers to prepare them to buy your next item or a version of the product they already have
Did you tell me! It took me an entire weekend to go through all the responses. I want to thank all those who were kind enough to write an answer. Thank you for your participation in this contest. Now let’s look at the outcomes!
The Results
Who was the winner? The first step of the process for managing products, Know, was the winner, but not by a lot! The second stage Plan is an extremely close second. Third place was further back in slot #4 – Create.
The most exciting thing is which parts of the management process failed. The three final steps are: Refine, Succeed, and Next. I’ll write more about this in the future.
What it means is that people seem to be aware of the idea that if they wish to be successful in managing your product, it is essential to conduct your research prior to the launch. Conducting a study of the market and knowing your client prior to beginning manufacturing and shipping products is crucial.
What These Results Tell Us
As a veteran producer, I can say that the findings of this survey do not really impress me at all However, they do prove many things. Product managers tend to prefer to concentrate on what’s the “sexy” part of product management: the definition of the product. What we don’t enjoy as much is the chore of actually helping make the products sell after they’ve been developed.
This is an oversight from our side, I believe. If you’re looking to become an effective product manager and rise higher in your organization, you’re not likely to be praised for how beautiful a product you have created (unless you are employed by Apple). Instead, what your business will be looking for you to do is develop a product that could sell a significant amount. This is precisely how it happens in the management process.
If you want your product to be successful, the product must be a success on your own. The last few steps of the process for managing products involve a lot of working with other individuals and departments within your company. This isn’t an easy task, and, in fact, you do not have much control over what your employees are likely to do.
At the end of the day, being a product manager can be an extremely challenging job. There are a lot of tasks we must accomplish, and it’s not always easy to know what we should do or how to determine whether we’ve done it correctly.
Next Steps
Then why have we gone through the hassle of conducting an online survey? It’s simple – you’ve been asking for it. In the four years I’ve published the Accidental Product Manager; there hasn’t been a single day that’s been a time that I haven’t received inquiries from readers on some or all aspects of being a manager for products. I’ve been there, and I’ve been there, and I’m ready to share my knowledge.
In the end, the process of answering questions one at a was, to me, not very efficient. I’m confident that there are many of you who are asking the same questions. I had to think of the possibility of providing you with a product management tool that you can use to answer your questions on the best way to be a good manager.
I’m almost ready to wrap the final details of the online product manager training course I’ll launch here within a couple of days. This will be different from any similar Product Management training you’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing, so keep an eye out. Many exciting things are on the way!
What All Of This Means For You
This has been a great experience to learn from. A lot of times, I believe I’m an expert, and it’s helpful to remind myself that I’m really not! That I received multiple responses from a variety of people shows me that there’s a massive demand for beneficial information about managing your product.
It’s clear that the field of management of products is still in its early stages of development. We’re all keen to know what happens in the beginning. We’re in part right in that you need to start off with an excellent start if you would like your product to be successful later, further down the road. But, it’s evident that we do not entirely understand what the source of the money is. It’s when the product has been developed. Then the complicated product management process begins!
I’ve found the answers you’ve asked for. Thank you for supplying them to me. Now, I’m going to come up with a plan and develop the training you’re so insisting on. Just a little bit of time, and I’m sure that I’ll be in a position to offer you what you’re asking to receive…
