Recently, I’ve spoken to a lot of people who are trying with trying to “figure out” their niche to run their business. Some are just beginning their journey, while others are in business for some time but feel they feel that “something is missing” in their marketing as well as their market segments and their products.
They aren’t “dumb” people – most of them have a pretty proficient grasp of “marketing” stuff but seem to be in limbo, unable to locate the spark that can spark their activities.
I was there, around an 18-month period. My business was growing well, and I was close to the six-figure threshold as I spent lots of time with my three-year-old and my newborn and was working for around 25 hours or more per week (and doing yoga every day!)
There was something that seemed off. I started feeling like I was constantly checking my clock, and doing everything “by the book” – where had my imagination and personality disappeared?
My skills and knowledge in marketing can only get me up to the limit. What are the things I truly believe in and who do would like to be to my peers?
“Plugging along” doesn’t mean growth or progress. It is time to ignite the FIRE in order to break out of the “clone drone” existence.
The #1 Reason You Are Stuck
To move out of inertia and discover the passion to guide powerful actions, we have to establish our main Why, WHO, WHAT and how – which can easily translate into your specific area of expertise if you approach it correctly.
“Yeah yes, I’ve tried the “niche’ thing more than a dozen times through various courses and workshops but it hasn’t gotten me any further. I’m still a bit in a state of confusion and, frankly, am feeling a bit lost because I seem to like the one who cannot understand the issue,” you may say.
I’m sure you’ve experienced it all, been there, and experienced this.
The problem is that most of these courses present “niche” as “a thing” to market. They oversell the subject with too much focus upon “formula” and “research” in a way that is out of context – as if it’s the magic medicine that will ease all your suffering if you simply “find your niche.”
Unfortunately, many people were “pushed” into a niche (because they were told that they must be in it today) before they were willing to “claim it”, picking an uninformed choice from a “niche menu” (because someone said it was “viable” or “lucrative”) only to discover that it isn’t a good fit after they’ve spent months down into the maze of constructing every aspect of this “made-believe” niche.
The focus and concentration on research and data have diverted you from the main element in the equation You!
You are the key ingredient for your business. Data are simply representations from the past. They can be used to educate. They can’t synthesize or invent without your uniqueness and imagination.
However, if you remain in the market’s collective memory you’ll end up with something that is a reflection of “what has been,” not something that is innovative and is looking at the future.
We cram ourselves with “other people’s viewpoints and ways of doing things” in the absence of our own opinions as well as conviction, passion, and passion. The checklists, templates blueprints, formulas, and blueprints weigh us down.
They inspire us to believe that about the world outside our own lives, we can discover the keys into the realm.
The first step towards identifying your own personal Why, Who, What or HOW, is to rethink every single thing – is this notion or belief being rooted in your soul, or was it something you were taught to be “supposed to be?”
In that same way, you can consider what you and your business are all about What do you want to achieve?
Why did you start this business first in the first (Be self-centered here. There is no one to judge You don’t have any obligation to help save our world.)
How do you wish your company to do for you?
What are your passion and your conviction? What do you care about? What gets you excited? What is it that makes you angry over your work?
Which are the superpowers you have?
How do you mix conviction, desire superpowers, and desires in one and then express it to the fullest extent possible in your work so that your persona shines through?
Who would you like to work with who will truly make you smile? Don’t choose women 25-45 as I don’t believe that all women between 25 and 45 will inspire you.
What does your faith say to the people you’re addressing? What are the ways your superpowers can help these people in a way other superpowers aren’t able to?
You’re not going to alter your message to accommodate market research information. You will incorporate them into your marketing plan so that marketing can work for your big reason.
Once you reach the bottom of the issue and identify your passion and desire and vision, you’ll also find that PASSION from the GUTS which leads to COMMITMENT that is what drives the desire to “stick with it” and achieve it.
